Google Pixel 8 Pro will be announced on 4th of October

Coming up on 4th October at 1PM, the next Made by Google event is already drumming up excitement. Based on invitations sent out to the press, it's fairly clear that Google is gearing up to unveil the newest members of its Pixel lineup.

Interestingly, this announcement trails hot on the heels of Google inadvertently leaking an image that looks suspiciously like the Pixel 8 Pro on its own online shop. To thicken the plot, all of this coincides with Apple declaring the date for its own iPhone event on 15th September. While Google is keeping mum for now, it wouldn't be surprising if a Pixel Watch or some other hardware also steps into the spotlight at the upcoming event.

So, mark your calendars, folks. With rivals lining up their own showcases, Google seems set to throw its hat in the ring with some intriguing hardware additions. Stay tuned for what could be a tech-packed autumn season.

The table below lists the preliminary specifications of what we expect the phone to have.

Various renders have been leaked, and Google themselves appears to have leaked a photo of the Pixel 8 Pro on the Google Store.

This year's smartphone lineup features two intriguing codenames: Husky and Shiba. Leaked display specs indicate that Husky is likely the Pixel 8 Pro, boasting a resolution of 2822×1344 pixels. On the other hand, the more compact Pixel 8, codenamed Shiba, comes with a 2268×1080 pixel resolution. Both represent a slight step down from the existing Pixel 7 models, hinting at subtle yet appreciable enhancements in Google's design expertise.

In terms of dimensions, the Pixel 8 is a tad more compact than its forerunner. It measures 150.5 x 70.8 x 8.9 mm, or 12 mm if you include the camera bump. This is a reduction from the Pixel 7's dimensions, which were 155.6 x 73.2 x 8.7 mm. The display size is also marginally smaller, with the Pixel 8 featuring a 6.17″ screen compared to the Pixel 7's 6.3″ panel.

Currently, it is believed that there will be a GN2 50MP main, IMX787 64MP ultrawide and 48MP telephoto camera on the rear,

This would mean that the ultrawide camera has had a significant upgrade and the primary camera should also see a decent improvement as that will go from the GN1 to GN2.

When it comes to the technical details, the Google Tensor G3 is presently undergoing trials. Known internally as Zuma, this third-generation custom chip from Google is speculated to be built on the yet-to-be-revealed Samsung Exynos 2300 processor. It utilises Samsung's 3nm technology, which, according to developer Kamila Wojciechowski, should offer performance on par with TSMC, the manufacturing facility currently trusted by Qualcomm and Apple.

As a point of comparison, the existing Google Tensor G2 is a 5nm chip, so the move to a 3nm node could potentially offer gains in both efficiency and overall performance.

The camera array is situated alongside the LED flash and a purported infrared temperature sensor. This sensor is said to enable users to gauge their body temperature by aiming it at their temple area for a brief moment.

One big upgrade for me is the rumoured inclusion of an ultrasonic ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. I hated the fingerprint sensor on the Pixel 6 Pro, and it remained the same for the 7/7 Pro.
